Kathak

Kathak is the classical dance of North India — the art of the kathakaar, the storyteller. It weaves rhythmic footwork, dazzling spins and delicate expression into narrative: a single dancer can hold a hall spellbound with nothing but ghungroos and a tabla.

At Fankaar, Kathak is the heart of the institute. Training begins with the body’s grammar — posture, tatkaar, hastak — and grows into repertoire: tukdas and tihais, amad and paran, and finally gat-bhaav, where technique becomes storytelling. Founder Vartika Tiwari (20+ years in the art) leads the Kathak faculty across all four Jaipur branches and online.

Students may learn purely for love of the form, or take the structured exam path with annual examinations through Bhatkhande, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and Rajasthan Sangeet Sansthan — credentials recognised across India. Every student, exam-bound or not, performs: our recitals and showcases are part of the training, not an afterthought.

Levels

  1. Prarambhik — Foundation — posture, tatkaar (footwork), hastak (hand movements), basic laya and the first tukdas.
  2. Praveshika — Intermediate — chakkars (spins), tihais, amad and paran; introduction to abhinaya (expression) and stage repertoire.
  3. Visharad — Advanced — full traditional repertoire, complex layakari, gat-bhaav storytelling, and preparation for degree-level examinations.

Levels follow recognised exam-stage names; students appear for annual examinations through affiliated boards.

Music

Hindustani Vocal

  • Ages6 – 70+
  • ModeOnline + Offline

Hindustani classical vocal is the mother discipline of North Indian music — every instrument aspires to the voice. Training begins with swar sadhana: finding and holding true pitch, breath control, and the patience of slow practice. From there students move into raag — the melodic personalities of Indian music — and taal, the rhythmic cycles that give it architecture.

Classes run at our Malviya Nagar and Tonk Road branches, in small batches grouped by age and level. The path is exam-oriented for those who want it, with annual examinations through Bhatkhande, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and Rajasthan Sangeet Sansthan; casual learners are equally welcome — many of our adult students sing purely for the joy of it.

A note for parents: vocal training is the most patient of the arts. Progress is slow, then sudden — and the musical ear a child builds here lasts a lifetime, whatever they go on to do.

Structured levels aligned to Bhatkhande and Gandharva Mahavidyalaya exam stages — current level mapping shared on enquiry.

Instrument

Guitar

Guitar at Fankaar is taught the way we teach everything: fundamentals first. Students learn correct posture and hand position before speed, real chord vocabulary before shortcuts, and enough theory to understand why a song works — not just how to copy it.

Classes run at the Tonk Road branch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons, alongside our keyboard and vocal batches — convenient for families with more than one learner. The repertoire balances what students love to play with what builds their hands: film songs and pop sit next to finger exercises and scale work.

Levels

  1. Beginner — Posture, tuning, open chords, strumming patterns and first songs.
  2. Intermediate — Barre chords, fingerstyle, scales, and playing with rhythm backing.

Progression is skill-based; ask us about exam options at enquiry.

Keyboard

The keyboard is the friendliest doorway into music — every note is visible, every interval makes sense. That makes it a superb first instrument for children, and a satisfying one for adults who want to finally learn to play.

At Fankaar’s Tonk Road branch, keyboard students learn note reading and finger technique from day one, then move into chords, both-hands coordination and expressive playing. Batches run Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Because our roots are classical, students also develop something rarer: a trained ear — the ability to hear a melody and find it on the keys.

Levels

  1. Beginner — Note reading, finger numbering, single-hand melodies and simple chords.
  2. Intermediate — Both-hands coordination, chord progressions, dynamics and performance pieces.

For parents

Why learn classical arts?

A classical training gives a child far more than a skill. The rhythmic mathematics of Kathak's layakari sharpens the mind; the discipline of daily riyaaz builds focus that carries into schoolwork; and the stage experience of recitals builds a confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Above all, classical arts connect a student to something older and larger than themselves — a living tradition, passed hand to hand from guru to shishya for centuries. Whether your child becomes a performer or simply a more thoughtful, disciplined and cultured adult, the years spent here are never wasted.

Common questions

Before you enrol

What is the youngest age you accept for classes?

We take Kathak and keyboard students from age six, guitar from eight, and vocal from six. There is no upper age limit — many of our students are adults, including learners past seventy.

Do I have to take examinations?

No. Exams (Prarambhik, Praveshika, Visharad through Bhatkhande, Gandharva Mahavidyalaya or Rajasthan Sangeet Sansthan) are optional. Many students learn purely for the joy of the art. We recommend a path based on each student's goals.

Can I learn online?

Yes. Kathak is taught live online to students across India and abroad, and Hindustani vocal is available online on request, subject to batch availability.

What are the fees?

Fees depend on the course, level and branch. Message us on WhatsApp with what you'd like to learn and we'll share current fees the same day.

Which course is right for you?

One message is all it takes — tell us who's learning and which branch suits you, and we'll take it from there.
